Students will examine a text using literary critical lenses while exploring character development through a coming-of-age narrative. They will explore character changes as a result of the complex interaction of relationships built with others and outside world experiences.

A community’s cultural and historical traditions and knowledge are often passed down from one generation to another through oral rather than written means.  Students will explore the role of oral tradition in literature and drama through the interdisciplinary study of a Greek tragedy.

This unit, which leads into the summer reading text, serves as an introduction into the world of stylistic and argumentative analysis needed for the second semester, while at the same time laying the foundation for the AP Capstone Seminar course.

Students will use multiple texts and resources to explore the relationship between gender and the media. Using the thematic connection of gender and the media, they will conduct research to produce a position paper going through all the steps of the writing process.

Students will explore the elements of satire while using the reading strategy SOAPSTone (Speaker, Occasion, Audience, Purpose, Subject, Tone) in order to provide a concrete strategy to help students identify and use these central components of a text. Students will also focus on making meaningful textual annotations.

Students will explore literature surrounding the holocaust, examining the effects of historical events and perspectives on the development of character. Students will explore the historical context and setting that influence authors’ perspectives and readers’ interpretation of text.
