Activity 1: History of MLK

​Read the Newsela article "Martin Luther King Jr." and answer the accompanying comprehension questions.

Activity 2: The March That Led to MLK's Arrest

​Watch the video "The March That Led to MLK's Arrest" from the Smithsonian for some background knowledge about MLK's arrest in 1963 in Birmingham.

Activity 3: Alabama Clergymen and SOAPSTone

​Read the public statement made by eight Alabama clergymen in response to MLK's protest. Then analyze the statement using the SOAPStone strategy.

Activity 4: MLK's Response

​While in jail, King responded to the public statement made by the Alabama clergymen. His letter is now known as the famous “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” As you read, identify how King responds to the clergymen and how he challenges their arguments.

Activity 5: Summer Reading Assignment

During the break, you must read selected chapters of Thank You For Arguing: What Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson Can Teach Us About the Art of Persuasion by Jay Heinrichs (2017). Find the specifics here.

Activity 6: Wow Your Audience!

Upon returning to class, students will present a chapter from Thank You for Arguing. Students will be assigned the chapter they must present. Class time will be given to work on this assignment. Get the assignment details here.
